How do you help a dysfunctional family?
You can only help each individual with their unique problems. It is up to them to decide if their family issues are causing problems for them. When one member of the family starts to get better the whole family will respond in various possible ways and the whole system will change .Focus on the one member who is most aware and willing to do something about it. Only they will be motivated enough to make a difference. But one person's recovery has to be the goal, not the whole family. The oldest child with the depression is a possibility. I am a child of a dysfunctional family. I was the lost child who suffered with depression. My mother was the caregiver with depression. We are the only ones in the family who have had therapy. Most families are somewhat dysfunctional, only the members who want to change can really be helped.
