What are the disadvantages of receiving monetary help from the government for a disability?

My mom seems to dislike the idea of welfare. I could definitely use the help; I'm a college student. I would probably be eligible for SS/disability because of a mental disability I have. What are the disadvantages of being on SS? Is it harder to get a job/apartment?
