Did he just give me a Compliment? Does he like me? PLEASE HELP!?!?

Ok so this morning this guy that i like rode my bus and he SAT BY ME. He normally does not ride my bus, but he did because he told me that he usually gets a ride from his neighbors or walks to school, but he decided to take the bus. He also said "I hate riding the bus." And I said "Why? This is your first time riding it." And he said "Yeah but at least you ride the bus." Was that a compliment? Because he did sit by me when there were plenty of seats available and started talking to me. And also after he got off the bus I guess he saw me walking through the hallyway because he came and talked to me again.. asking abut school and stuff. I have known this guy for almost a year so we are pretty good friends. Do you think he likes me? he smiles at me to everytime i see him. And a couple of weeks ago he told me how the girls are supposed to ask the guys out for the winter formal... what was he trying to say? And yes its true the girls are supposed to ask the guys for the winter formal. He also said "probably no one will ask me." was he trying to convince me to ask him out? Was that a hint? or just small talk? it might be to late if I ask him now huh? I would greatly appreciate it if anyone would answer! thanks!
